Biography
Originally from Seoul, Korea, Unjin's international debut came with Miami WMC 2010 as Korea’s best
electronic musician. Since then Unjin is fast becoming known in Asian techno circles as one of top
producers and DJs to watch. Unjin is the founder of Korea’s first techno label 'ECI Korea' , a platform to
expose emerging domestic and international talents to the world stage. As composer and producer, Unjin
has played a key role in laying the foundation for a Korean techno culture.
In 2010, as a part of the duo East Collective, the first techno album 'Spiral Sequence' was released,
receiving international recognition for the successful remixes of works for Ryogo Yamamori and DJ
Sodeyama with Drumcell, Mr. Jones, Jonas Kopp, Tony Rohr & Layton Giodani, and inspiring many young
Korean artists.
Under the ECI Korea label, Unjin's first concept album 'Kids In Seoul' came to life with support from DJs
2000 and One, Abstract Division, Efdemin, Etapp Kyle, Troy Pierce. 'Kids In Seoul' explores techno culture
and night life in Korea and beyond.
Released in 2016, 'Fog Machine Remix EP' with Ness, Dorian Gray, Miller & Keane and Unjin himself,
gained huge international success and support from global techno communities.
While holding residency at Vurt Club in Seoul, Unjin tours internationally. Host venues have included Tresor
Berlin, London's Ministry of Sound, Zouk in Singapore, Tokyo's Womb and Air, the Sullivan Room in New
York City, Spybar in Chicago, ℅ Pop in Germany, Ultra Japan, Midi festival, Shelter, Beijing's Lantern and
Sonar Korea.
Unjin's reputation for pushing musical boundaries began back in the mid 90’s as one of Korea's first
underground indie musicians in Seoul's relatively young underground music scene, grew through his
imaginative live ambient solo project Rainjacket, and continues to develop in exciting new directions as an
independent producer and DJ on the international stage.
운진 (Unjin)은 서울에서 태어나 18세에 홍대에서 밴드 Yellow Kitchen의 베이시스트로 음악 활동을 시작하였으며 그후 캐나다 벤쿠버에서 Rainjacket이라는 이름으로 활동하였다. 2001년에 Rainjacket 셀프타이틀 정규앨범을 발매하였으며 이 앨범은 같은해 캐나다에서 가장 권위있는 음악 라디오 프로그램인 CBC Brave New Wave에서 British Columbia주 최고의 일렉트로니카 앨범으로 소개되며 북미 및 유럽, 일본, 한국의 전자음악씬에 알려지기 시작했다. Rainajcket 이름으로 벤쿠버 CITR 101.9 fm - Plutonian Nights에 정기 게스트로 출연, 라이브 퍼포먼스를 해왔으며 2003년 벨기에 뉴미디어 그룹 Lab[AU]와 함께 Resfest에서 공연및 전시, 2006년 Sonar Korea 무대등에서는 포츈쿠키와 함께 라이브 공연을 선보였었다.
2006년 한국으로 돌아온후 본격적인 DJ로 전향한 운진은 2008년 미니멀,테크노 레이블 ECI Korea를 만들었으며 2010년에는 망이실로와 함께 East Collective팀을 결성 Miller Miami 한국 우승자로 Miami WMC 에 초대되어 국제무대에 데뷔하게 되었다. 그동안 한국에서 Ultra Korea, Global Gathering Korea, World DJ Festival등의 무대와, 해외 Ministry of Sound in UK, Zouk in Singapore, Womb and Air in Japan, Sullivan Room in New York, Spybar in Chicago, Asylum in Hawaii, Time in Manila, Cubic in Macau, M2 in Shanghai, ℅ Pop in Germany, Champs Libres in France, Ultra Japan, Midi Festival China등의 크고 작은 무대에서 공연을 해오고 있다.
테크노 디제이로써 음반은 2010년 East Collective - Spiral Sequence LP를 발매하며 국내외 테크노 팬들에 알려지기 시작, 그후 다수의 싱글 발매와 리믹스 앨범에 참여 하였으며 2015년 미니앨범 Kids In Seoul을 발매하며 전세계 수많은 테크노 디제이들과 매니아들에게 지지를 받고 있다.
익스페리멘탈리즘과 추상적인 앰비언트 사운드에 기초한 운진의 음악 성향은 진보적인 방식의 샘플링과 즉흥적인 연주 레코딩위에 간결하지만 댄서블한 리듬과 결합하여 그만의 독특한 테크노 음악을 선보이고 있다.
